Recipe for a Successful Online Student

05 Sep

There are a multitude of online quizzes available to check student readiness for online learning.  Most of these quizzes are sponsored by the agency or university hosting the course.  Fundamentally, they all support the same standards.

Joe Student is an excellent distance learning candidate if he:

  • is an independent learner
  • is self-motivated
  • is excited by the idea of educational challenges
  • rarely, if ever, has sought out an instructor at their office unless it was required
  • emails using attachments regularly
  • surfs the internet regularly
  • understands uploading/downloading and discussion boards with little-to-no explanation.
  • needs more flexibility in his schedule.
  • is not interested in the “campus” experience and/or doesn’t need the social experience of being on campus to make college real
  • has excellent reading comprehension skills and doesn’t mind communicating solely in written format.

I think motivation is the single biggest factor to success in an online degree program — especially when the classes are open-ended and don’t follow school-imposed deadlines. A student might start out by wanting to take a few days off. But then that turns into a few weeks, then maybe a month or two. This could then go on indefinitely.
